Payments report

The Payments report counts your payments and what became of them — approved, declined, incomplete or abandoned — with the revenue, refunds and chargebacks behind them. Choose it in the Report menu of Explore.

Which payments it counts

The report counts every payment worth money that has an outcome. It leaves out a free payment, a checkout nobody submitted, a payment cancelled without ever being declined, and a renewal that never reached the gateway.

The date range selects payments by when they were created, in your timezone. Every measure reads a payment as it stands today and counts it in the period it was created in.

warning

A refund, a dispute or a successful retry that comes weeks after a payment changes the numbers of the period the payment was created in. Recent periods read low on refunds and chargebacks until their payments have aged.

Each payment has exactly one outcome:

OutcomeWhat it means
ApprovedThe payment was approved. A payment refunded or charged back later was approved first, so it stays approved.
DeclinedThe issuer or the gateway declined the latest attempt, and the payment has not succeeded since — whether a retry is scheduled, it was cancelled afterwards or it rests as failed.
IncompleteThe customer was sent to their bank or wallet to approve the payment and has not yet returned.
AbandonedA purchase that ended as failed without a decline: the customer left the redirect without completing it, or the attempt ended before it reached the gateway.

So Payments is always the sum of Approved payments, Declined payments, Incomplete payments and Abandoned payments. An approved or a declined payment is an attempt, because the issuer or the gateway answered it. Incomplete and abandoned payments are not attempts, so the approval rates leave them out.

Measures

MeasureWhat it counts
PaymentsPayments with an outcome: approved, declined, incomplete or abandoned.
Attempted paymentsPayments the issuer or the gateway answered: approved or declined.
Approved paymentsPayments that were approved, including those refunded or charged back later.
Declined paymentsPayments whose latest attempt was declined and that have not succeeded since.
Incomplete paymentsPayments still waiting for the customer to return from their bank or wallet.
Abandoned paymentsPurchases that ended as failed without a decline. No issuer said no, so they are not attempts.
Refunded paymentsApproved payments refunded in part or in full. A payment charged back after a refund counts as a chargeback instead.
ChargebacksApproved payments the cardholder disputed.
Items soldUnits sold on approved payments: the quantities on their cart lines, added up. A payment with no cart lines sells none.
Gross revenueThe amounts of approved payments, before refunds and chargebacks.
Net revenueGross revenue less what was refunded and the whole amount of every payment charged back: Gross revenue minus Refund amount minus Chargeback amount.
Refund amountWhat was refunded on approved payments.
Chargeback amountThe amounts of the payments the cardholder disputed.
Average order valueGross revenue per approved payment.
Approval rateApproved payments as a percentage of attempted payments. A payment charged back later counts as approved.

Refund rateRefunded payments as a percentage of approved payments, by count.
Chargeback rateChargebacks as a percentage of approved payments, by count.

The Breakdown column says whether you can choose the entry in Break down by, and the Filter column whether you can filter on it. A payment with no value for a breakdown is under none.
